INSEARCHOFHIPHOP was created by Dr. Hydeen K. Beverly, MSW. He is a father, hip hop artist, professor of social work, and a clinical therapist. He received his PhD from the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin, his MSW from the University of Michigan, and his BSW from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He bridges principles of social work, education, and history with elements of hip hop to encourage Resilience, Healing, and Triumph.
His research, teaching, and clinical practice is grounded in 15 years of direct social work practice with youth and families in various settings. His clinical experience consists of serving youth and families to prepare them for education attainment and future success. He worked in school settings as an educator and mental health counselor and has extensive experience working with wraparound and family preservation programs.
Dr. Hydeen is an author and hip hop artist. He uses creative writing as a tool to encourage positive youth development. His workshop titled In Search of Hip Hop is a first-person arts-based presentation that uses hip hop lyrics to tell his story of resilience, healing, and triumph. This workshop shows how creative writing and performance based activities encourage youth to develop skills that support spirituality and wellness; life-long learning; identity development; understanding of culture and community building; and promote education attainment.
